Wailuku, Maui, May 10 — William Atwater Baldwin, 88, one of the pioneers of Maui’s pineapple industry, died last Wednesday at Alameda County Hospital in California. Word of his death was received here by his sister, Mrs. D.B. Murdoch of Sunnyside, Paia. He had been a resident of Niles, California, since 1936. Survivors include his wife, Nina (Prime) Baldwin, a son, William P. of Sacramento, and a daughter, Mrs. Frances Roeding of Niles. BORN ON BIG ISLE Mr. Baldwin was born July 20, 1869, in Kohala, Hawaii, the son of David Dwight and Lois Gregory (Morris) Baldwin. He was educated at Oahu College (now Punahou School), Phillips Exeter Academy and Yale University. His first job in 1892 was with the Hawaiian Sugar Company on Kauai. His uncle, Henry Perrine Baldwin, was one of the founders of the company. From 1900 to 1904, he served successively as manager of the Waimea Sugar Company on Kauai, Kahuku Plantation Company on Oahu and Hawaiian Sugar Company. In 1904 he came to Maui as manager of the new Haiku Fruit and Packing Company. Mr. Baldwin was with this company for 22 years and was its president from 1912-1918. SERVED IF FIRST WAR He later served as a staff member of the Maui Agricultural Experiment Station of the Associated Pineapple Canners and as agriculturist for its successor, the Pineapple Producers’ Co-operation Association. Mr. Baldwin was a captain with Company H, 35th Regiment, during World War I. He was director of the 1927 Maui County Fair and 1928 president of the Maui Chamber of Commerce.
