Hjorth, long time resident of Hawaii died at Paia Hospital, Maui, on March 15 after an illness of several weeks. The judge, as he was known to his many friends in Hawaii, was born in Aalborg, Denmark, on Sept. 4, 1868, the son of Jacob Peter and Louise Vilhelmina (van Rosendaal) Hjorth. He was educated in private schools and in business college in Denmark, and was a graduate of the Royal Danish Naval Cadet and Navigation School. He spent the years from 1884 to 1893 at sea, sailing under flags of 17 nations and visiting all corners of the world. In 1893 he came to Hawaii and took up residence on the island of Kauai where he spent the greater part of his 56 years in the Islands. During his long stay here, he was with Kekaha Sugar Co., Inter-Island Steam Navigation Co., Hawaiian Dredging Co., Hanamaulu Plantation, Nawiliwili Garage, Garden Island Publishing Co., of which he was one of the founders, and Lihue Plantation Co. In 1916 he was admitted to practice law in all district courts of Hawaii and on Sept. 1, 1916, was appointed district magistrate at Lihue, where he served for 10 years. In the meantime he maintained his connection with Lihue Plantation, and in 1937 he retired from business and spent his retirement first in Honolulu and later on Maui, living with one of his sons. The judge is survived by five children: John Thomas of Greenwich, Conn.; Eric Edward, of San Francisco; Herbert Alexander and Francis Reginald, of Honolulu, and Gwendolyn Constance (Mrs. Everett Lorenz) of Wahasha, Minn. Five grandchildren also survive in addition to one brother and two sisters living in Copenhagen, Denmark. He was a first lieutenant, Officers’ Reserve Corps, HNG; a member of Hawaiian Lodge NO. 21, F.&A.M., and Harmony Lodge No. 3, I.O.O.F. Funeral services will be private and interment will be at a later date. The family requests that no flowers be sent, preferring that donations be made to some worthwhile charity.
