Nellist RICHARD GILBERT AYER, physician. Organization and maintenance of the police emergency hospital in Honolulu has occupied much of the attention of Dr. R. G. Ayer since his arrival in Hawaii, in 1914. Engaging in private practice for a time, Dr. Ayer became affiliated with the municipal project, building up the hospital unit, then having but limited medical and surgical facilities, to its present high degree of efficiency. He has also been surgeon for the Honolulu Rapid Transit & Land Co., Ltd., since 1914. Dr. Ayer has had long and varied experience in hospital work, having spent 14 years in Mexican hospitals and in private practice in Mexico before coming to Hawaii. He was affiliated with various hospital units in the states of Durango, Chihuahua and Zacatecas and participated in stirring events attending revolutionary outbreaks in the Mexican Republic. Born in Haverhill, Essex County, Mass., Dec. 27, 1867, Dr. Ayer is the son of Gilbert and Katherine (Hall) Ayer. His father was a shoe manufacturer. He was educated in private schools of Haverhill, Tilton Academy, Tilton, N.H.; Philips Andover, Andover, Mass., and Harvard University, receiving his M.D. degree at Harvard Medical School in 1891. He began his professional career in the Massachusetts General Hospital at Boston. Dr. Ayer and Blanche Estelle Westcott were married Sept. 15, 1896, at Albany, N.Y. They have one daughter, Mildred Florence Stafford. Dr. Ayer is a member of various college organizations and the Medical Society of Hawaii.
