Development of the Hawaii National Park, containing the continuously active Kilauea volcano on the Island of Hawaii, and Haleakala on Maui, the largest extinct volcano in the world, so that the scenic glories of Hawaii may be as well known as Yellowstone or Yosemite National Parks is engaging the attention of Thomas Boles, who has been superintendent of the park since it was set aside by act of Congress. Born in Yell County, Ark., he is the son of Judge Thomas and Catherine (Keith) Boles. He was educated in the grammar and high schools of Fort Smith, Ark., and took a civil engineering course at the School of Mines, University of Missouri. Mr. Boles engaged for years in various construction and engineering endeavors, as construction engineer for the Illinois Steel Bridge Co., in Arkansas and Oklahoma; assistant field engineer, Interstate Commerce Commission; chief engineer, Fort Smith Light & Traction Co., and chief engineer, Fort Smith & Western Railroad Co. He arrived in Hawaii in March, 1922, as the first superintendent of the Hawaii National Park, appointed to this position by the Secretary of the Interior. He has jurisdiction over a total area of 118,000 acres of the volcanic area of the Territory. Mr. Boles served as director for Northwest Arkansas, American Association of Engineers; captain of engineers, Arkansas National Guard, and was elected to the Arkansas state senate in 1910. He is a Mason and a Republican in politics. He married Miss Jimmie Green and they have one child, Margaret Boles.
