Nellist GEORGE CHALMERS, SR., Retired Plantation Manager. A resident of Hawaii for more than forty years, George Chalmers for almost half a century was a prominent figure in the upbuilding and modernization of the sugar industry of the islands. During a period of more than twenty-five years he held the responsible position of manager of the Waimanalo Sugar Co. on the island of Oahu, one of the conspicuously successful plantations of the Territory. A visit to Hawaii in 1884 resulted in a quick decision by Mr. Chalmers to make his home here. He was head overseer for the Hilo Sugar Co. on Hawaii from 1884 until 1895, when he became manager at Waimanalo. Upon his retirement in 1919, Mr. Chalmers was succeeded as manager of Waimanalo by his son, George Chalmers, Jr., the first of a family of eight children born and reared in Hawaii. The sugar production of Waimanalo has increased from 1000 tons in 1894 to 7000 tons in 1923. Born at Netherley, Kincardinshire County, Scotland, July 26, 1857, Mr. Chalmers is the son of Joseph and Elizabeth (Jamieson) Chalmers. He received his education in the Cookney School, Kincardinshire, Scotland. Mr. Chalmers and Mary Ann Duncan (now dead) were married at Hilo, Hawaii, in October, 1885. He married Jessie Ann Thomson at Aberdeen, Scotland, in September, 1902. Mr. Chalmers’ eight children are George, Mary, William, Bella, Joseph, Robert, Thomas and Florence Chalmers. Mr. Chalmers is a member of the Hawaiian Sugar Planters’ Association and the Automobile Club, and although retired, is still keenly interested in territorial and national affairs.
