Nellist GEORGE MILES COLLINS, Engineer. George M. Collins, superintendent of the land department of the Bernice P. Bishop Estate, the foundation of the Kamehameha Schools, has been engaged in engineering work in Hawaii for more than ten years. His first employment in the Territory was on the Waiahole tunnel system, a large engineering project undertaken in connection with the irrigation system of the Oahu Sugar Co., and on which he was engaged under H. K. Bishop. In January, 1914, Mr. Collins was appointed assistant city and county engineer of Honolulu and two years later he was made chief of that department, remaining in office until October, 1917, when he joined the engineering staff of the Bishop Estate. Mr. Collins was born at Los Gatos, California, May 16, 1889, the son of Oliver and Sophie C. (Lyon) Collins. He was educated in the grammar and high schools of Los Gatos and received a B.S. degree at the University of California in 1911, after completing his course in the College of Mines. Beginning his professional career as an engineer in 1911, he was associated with the Utah Copper Co., at Garfield, Utah, from June until September of that year, and was then connected with the American Smelting & Refining Co. until he came to Hawaii. He was a member of a commission of three appointed by the Board of Supervisors to make plans for the Kalihi and Waikiki sewer systems, which were completed in 1924, serving on this commission with Arthur R. Keller and S. W. Tay. Mr. Collins married Miss Geraldine Frances Neumann of San Francisco at Salt Lake City, Oct. 17, 1912. They have one son, George Francis Collins, born in San Francisco, Feb. 14, 1921.
