Nellist CLEMENT C. CROWELL, Sheriff of Maui County. Sheriff of the County of Maui for more than fifteen years, and in public service since 1906, Clement C. Crowell, one of the best known officials in the Territory, was born at Wailuku, Maui, Aug. 4, 1881, the son of John Matthews and Mary Crowell. He attended the Wailuku schools, Royal school, Kamehameha primary school and in 1898 was graduated from St. Louis College, Honolulu. After leaving school, Sheriff Crowell was engaged as a car and wharf builder and car inspector with the Oahu Railway & Land Co. and later had similar experience with the Kahului Railway Co. of Maui. He entered the Maui police department in 1906 as a special officer, later served as lieutenant of police and clerk to the sheriff, was elected deputy sheriff of Wailuku in 1908 and was appointed sheriff of Maui County in 1910 to fill an unexpired term. He has been elected to the office at every subsequent election. Sheriff Crowell has had service in the National Guard of Hawaii, is a member of the Maui County Fair and Racing Association, commissioner of Lahainaluna school, was chairman of the Maui Draft Board during the World war and is a Forester and a member of the Native Sons of Hawaii.
