Nellist WILLIAM W. DANEL, Dentist. One of the three men who raised the first American flag at Hilo after annexation of the islands by the United States, Dr. William W. Danel has been a “kamaaina” dentist of the Territory for many years. After his education in the grammar and high schools and at the University of Pennsylvania he arrived in Hawaii in May, 1898, to practice his profession. With Dr. R. V. Williams and H. L. Shaw, Dr. Danel first unfurled the stars and stripes to the trade winds that sweep Hilo when word was received that Hawaii had become American Territory. He has practiced successfully in Honolulu for a long period. Dr. Danel was born in Freeport, Ill., April 29, 1865, the son of Samuel A. and Phoebe Danel. He married Ella Higgins of Montreal, on Dec. 9, 1903. He is a life member of the 32nd degree Scottish Rite Masons, belonging to a lodge in Shanghai, China.
