Nellist JOHN GOMES, Merchant. John Gomes, secretary of Andrade & Co., Ltd., clothiers, was born in Honolulu, May 3, 1894, the son of Frank and Virginia (Nunes) Gomes, was educated in the public schools of Honolulu, and at the age of sixteen entered McInerney’s store as an errand boy. Two years later he went to Silva’s Toggery as salesman, and remained there from 1912 to 1919, advancing to head salesman. Young Men’s Christian Association work claimed Mr. Gomes for a few months, and he was connected with the membership and physical training departments until May, 1920, when Andrade & Co., Ltd., was organized and he joined the firm as secretary. Mr. Gomes is actively interested in community welfare work, and for seven years directed athletics for the Honolulu Boys’ Club, and took charge of athletics for the young men’s division of the Y.M.C.A. He is now a member of the bowling, health, recreation and hand-ball committees of the “Y,” and is also a frequent referee in basketball contests and other athletic competitions. Mr. Gomes belongs to the Outrigger Canoe and Myrtle Boat clubs, Native Sons of Hawaii, and is treasurer of the Lusitana Society. In 1915 he married Lucy Faria of Honolulu and they have one child, Gertrude Virginia Gomes.
