Nellist JOHN HIND, Sugar Planter. Widely known as a financier and agriculturist, John Hind, owner and general director of extensive sugar plantation and coffee properties on the Island of Hawaii, has been actively interested for more than half a century in the industrial development of the Territory. He has carried on and expanded the several enterprises established by his late father, Robert Robson Hind, and has also successfully organized and managed other agricultural and industrial undertakings. In addition to the operation of a sugar plantation, he has extensively engaged in coffee growing in the Kona district of Hawaii and in recent years has given considerable attention to the production of pineapples. Born at Jarrow-on-Tyne, England, Aug. 2, 1858, the eldest son of Robert Robson and Mary (Urwin) Hind, Mr. Hind came to Hawaii with his mother from England in the early 60’s, joining his father, who had preceded them to the islands. After receiving a common school education he entered his father’s employ, the elder Mr. Hind being then engaged in early sugar mill projects on the islands of Hawaii. Upon his father’s retirement in 1884, Mr. Hind assumed the management of the Hawi Mill and Plantation Co. and other properties. For many years he managed the plantation, now directed by his son, J. Henry Hind, and is still president of the corporation. In 1909, Mr. Hind added the interests of J. B. Castle and W. W. Brunner to his coffee plantation, now known as the Captain Cook Coffee Co., Ltd., the largest producer of Kona coffee in the islands. He was president and general manager of the Kohala Ditch Co. during the period of its construction, and acquired full control during 1912. He is president and managing director of these corporations, as well as the Hawi Mill and Plantation Co., holds the same office in the Puakea Plantation Co., Homestead Plantation Co., Hawaii Railway Co. and Kahena Plantation Co. and is a director of the Kohala Pineapple Co., Ltd. Mr. Hind married Ella Renton (deceased) at Brooklyn, N.Y., in 1885. He married Alice Renton at Kohala, Hawaii, in 1889. They have five children, Robert Renton, John Henry, Oswald Arthur, Muriel and James Urwin Hind. Mr. Hind is a Mason and a member of the Pacific and Oahu Country Clubs in Honolulu.
