Nellist ROBERT HIND, Rancher. Identified for forty years with the development of cattle ranching and dairying in Hawaii, Robert Hind, son of a pioneer sugar planter who came to the islands from England in the 60’s, has also been prominent in public life and at present is devoting most of his attention to the improvement of land holdings on the islands of Hawaii and Oahu. Owner of a dairy near Diamond Head which has supplied Honolulu with creamery products for six years, Mr. Hind is engaged in building a modern dairy at Wailupe which, when completed, will be second to none in the Territory. He operates extensive ranch interests in Kona, Hawaii, where he has a large herd of purebred Holstein cattle. Mr. Hind was elected to the territorial senate from Hawaii in 1916 and reelected in 1920. Born Jan. 7, 1865, in Honolulu, Mr. Hind is a son of the late Robert Robson and Mary (Urwin) Hind. He was educated in the schools of Honolulu and at Trinity School, San Francisco. Returning to Hawaii in 1885, he became livestock overseer on Hawi plantation. In 1893 he entered into a partnership with Eben P. Low in the cattle ranch on the Island of Hawaii, now known as Puuwaawaa. In 1903 Mr. Hind purchased Mr. Low’s interest in the ranch and took over full management of the property, resigning his position with the Hawi Mill and Plantation Co., Ltd. which he had held continuously since 1885. Mr. Hind now has more than two thousand head of cattle on the Puuwaawaa ranch. Mr. Hind and Hannah Peirce Low were married in Honolulu, April 26, 1892. They have five children, Robert Leighton, Margaret Martha, Mona Clementina, Erma and Robson Urwin Hind. Mr. Hind is a Mason, Shriner, and a member of the Bohemian Club, San Francisco, and the Pacific, Commercial and Oahu Country clubs of Honolulu.
