Nellist DAVID HOWARD HITCHCOCK, Artist. Imbued with a deep love for his native Hawaii and convinced that his best in artistic expression could be developed upon its picturesque, colorful shore, D. Howard Hitchcock, noted artist, returned to reside in the islands at the completion of his art training abroad, and has produced much of his best work here. He has painted a number of volcano pictures which are on exhibition in the Bishop Museum, and innumerable Hawaiian scenes, many of which have been awarded gold medals. These are now to be found in public and private collections throughout various portions of the United States, Germany and England. In 1893 he had the distinction of exhibiting in the Paris Salon, and he was an exhibitor at the Alaska-Yukon Exposition. Following his preliminary education at Punahou School and Oberlin College, Ohio, Mr. Hitchcock studied art at the National Academy of Design, New York, and Julienne Academy in Paris. He studied under Virgil Williams in the San Francisco School of Art from 1885 to 1886, and while abroad studied under such masters as William Bouguereau, G. Ferrier and others. For several years he was president of the Kilohana Art League, and in June, 1924, he won recognition from the University of Hawaii when he was granted the honorary degree of Master of Arts. Mr. Hitchcock is a member of Lodge le Progres de l’Oceanie, F. & A. M.; the University Club, and the Salmagundi Club of New York. He was a charter member of the Oahu Country Club. He was born at Hilo, Hawaii, May 15, 1861, the son of David Howard and Almeda E. (Widger) Hitchcock, and grandson of H. R. Hitchcock, who came to Hawaii with the missionary group of 1831 and taught among the natives of Molokai. He is also a descendent of Matthias Hitchcock of Wiltshire, England, who settled in Boston in 1735. In 1898 Mr. Hitchcock married Hester Judd Dickson and they have three children, Howard Harvey, J. Dickson and Helen Hitchcock. File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/hi/statewide/bios/hitchcoc16gbs.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/hifiles/ File size: 2.7 Kb
