Nellist HARRY TRIEBNER HOLLMAN, Physician. Internationally recognized as an authority on leprosy, Dr. Harry T. Hollmann of Honolulu is credited with having originated its treatment with the ethyl esters extracts of chaulmoogra oil, which has been sensationally effective, checking the ravages of the disease and having effected apparent cures. The chaulmoogra oil specific, which was perfected as a result of Dr. Hollmann’s early work in Honolulu, is now in general use throughout the world where leprosy exists. Scores of former lepers have been released from detention in Hawaii as a result of treatment. Born in Philadelphia, Dec. 13, 1878, the son of Harry and Mary (Thomas) Hollmann, Dr. Hollmann was educated in the public schools of Philadelphia, Temple University and Medico Chirurgical College, now a part of the University of Pennsylvania, where he received his M.D. degree in 1898. He began his professional career as an instructor of pathology and bacteriology in the Medico Chirurgical College in 1898; from 1903 to 1906 he was a physician of the Philadelphia Bureau of Health, and in 1905-6 he was visiting ear, nose and throat surgeon at the Philadelphia General Hospital. Having developed an interest in the great problem presented to science by leprosy, he was appointed assistant superintendent of the leper settlement of the island of Molokai in 1906, and was transferred to the United States Leprosy Investigation Station, Honolulu, the following year. He was one of the first scientists to grow the organism which causes leprosy and was the first to cultivate the germ of “Rat leprosy.” In 1917 and 1918, Dr. Hollmann was director of the Leprosy Investigation Station of the United States Public Health Service and medical superintendent of the Kalihi Hospital, later resigning to become superintendent of the Queen’s Hospital for one year, following which he entered private practice in Honolulu . he is the author of many articles on leprosy and skin diseases which have been published by the U. S. Public Health Service. Dr. Hollmann is now engaged in private practice, specializing in dermatology and urology. He is a past District Deputy Grand Sire, I. O. O. F., for Hawaii; Past Grand, Harmony Lodge, I.O.O.F.; Past Chief Patriarch, Polynesian Encampment, I.O.O.F.; Past Worthy Patron, Lei Aloha Chapter, O.E.S.; a 32nd degree Mason, Shriner, honorary member the Sons and Daughters of Hawaiian Warriors, and a member of the Honolulu Golf Club.
