Nellist KENNETH CARL HOPPER, Newspaper Manager. Manager of a newspaper at the age of 19 years, Kenneth C. Hopper followed the profession of journalism after coming to Hawaii. He is now manager of the “Garden Island,” Kauai’s newspaper. Born in Mendocino County, California, on April 22, 1880, he is the son of John T. and Helen (Griffitts) Hopper. He became manager of the Los Alamos Central, a weekly newspaper in Santa Barbara, Calif., in 1899, but left that position to found his own paper, the Guadalupe Moon, in the same county. He sold this property two years later and came to Honolulu in 1901. He was with the mechanical department of the Hawaiian Gazette Co. for nine years, removing to Kauai in 1910. Soon afterward he became manager and secretary of the Garden Island Pub. Co. He was elected president of the corporation in 1924. Mr. Hopper interested himself in civic affairs and has served as vice- president and secretary of the Kauai Chamber of Commerce, president of the Lihue Tennis Association, member of the Kauai Council, Boy Scouts of America, and the county committee of the Kauai Y.M.C.A. He is a past noble grand Excelsior Lodge, No. 1, I.O.O.F., Honolulu. He married Gertrude Keeney at Guadalupe, Calif., on July 2, 1900, and they have three children, Thelma, Kenneth and Glenn Hopper.
