Nellist WILLIAM LEWERS HOPPER. A director of a number of important corporations, and trustee of the estate of his late father, James A. Hopper, a pioneer manufacturer of Honolulu, William L. Hopper, a resident of the islands since early childhood, has been identified with the business life of the community for many years. Mr. Hopper came to Hawaii in 1860 when a child of four years, making the long voyage from Boston by way of Cape Horn with his parents in the clipper ship “Syren.” His education was obtained at Punahou School and he later attended Bryant and Stratton’s Business College in Brooklyn. Returning to Honolulu, he went to work in his father’s rice mill and brass foundry, where he remained until the elder Hopper’s death in 1900. Mr. Hopper then assumed the management of the rice mill and foundry until 1906, when he retired from active business to direct his father’s estate and other interests. Mr. Hopper is a director of Waialua Agricultural Co., Ewa Plantation, Hawaiian Sugar Co., Olowalu Co., and the Waimanalo Sugar Co. Mr. Hopper is interested in religious and welfare work and is a trustee of the Christian Church of Honolulu. Born on Feb. 20, 1856, in New York City, Mr. Hopper married May Templeton of Kansas City, Mo., in 1882, and they had four children, Mrs. J. H. Bowman and Mrs. E. R Cameron of Honolulu; Mrs. Katherine Hopper Livingston, who died in Honolulu, Sept. 27, 1924, and Mary Ellen, who died in infancy.
