Nellist J. POPE HOWATT, Lumberman. A resident of Hawaii since 1896, J. Pope Howatt, of Lewers & Cooke, Ltd., has long been identified with the lumber business of the islands. Following his arrival here he was interested in coffee planting at Olaa, Hawaii, until 1899. For a short time he was a customs inspector at Honolulu, resigning to enter the employ of Lewers & Cooke, where he remained for three years. In 1903 he became associated with Wilder & Co., lumber merchants, and was yard superintendent until that firm was absorbed by Lewers & Cooke. He retained his position after the consolidation and in 1916 was transferred to the office staff. Born on Prince Edward Island, Canada, Oct. 5, 1865, Mr. Howatt is the son of Cornelius and Jane (Bell) Howatt. His boyhood was spent on his father’s farm in Canada, and upon completing his schooling he engaged in farming until he was twenty-one. Going to California in 1886 he received his first experience in the lumber industry at Eureka, Calif., where he was located for eleven years, before leaving for the islands. Mr. Howatt and Emily Wall were married at Eureka in June, 1892. They have one daughter, Mrs. Theodore Cooke (Muriel Howatt). Mr. Howatt is a Mason, Shriner and a member of the Commercial Club.
