Nellist FREDERICK GEORGE HUMMEL, Electrical Engineer. Frederick G. Hummel, vice- president, manager and a director of the Mutual Telephone Co., Ltd., came to Honolulu in 1909 to stay one year, directing the installation of the automatic telephone system. When that work was completed, Mr. Hummel remained as manager of the plant and has since been engaged in its development. Honolulu’s telephone system has been declared by engineering experts to be one of the most modern in the world. In addition to his other responsibilities, Mr. Hummel has had occasion to do considerable important work as an architect and building engineer. The central office building of the Mutual Telephone Co., on Alakea St., one of the most attractive and substantial business structures in Honolulu, was designed and built by Mr. Hummel in 1918-19 at a cost of only $110,000, despite the fact that at that time the costs of building materials and labor were at their peak. The branch offices at Kalihi and Kaimuki, in fact, all telephone buildings on this island, were also erected under Mr. Hummel’s direction. Mr. Hummel installed telephone plants in Toledo, Ohio; Los Angeles and Oakland, Calif., and Omaha, Neb., before coming to Hawaii, and has been continuously engaged in telephone engineering since he took his first position in Mansfield, O., when 19 years old. For several years he was state cable inspector for the Bell Telephone Co., with headquarters at Columbus, O. Mr. Hummel was born in Loudonville, O., Feb. 18, 1874, the son of George and Katherine (Anthony) Hummel and was educated in the public schools of Loudonville. In 1901 he married Ada Wilson of Toledo, Ohio.
