Nellist ROBERT A. HUTCHINSON, Plantation Manager. A pioneer who has contributed much to the sugar industry of Hawaii, Robert A. Hutchinson, manager of the Laupahoehoe Sugar Co. at Papaaloa, Hawaii, since 1915, has been engaged in plantation work in the islands for more than 30 years. Born Sept. 13, 1872, at Edinburgh, Scotland, the son of James and Margaret (Steuart) Hutchinson, he was educated at the Royal High School, Edinburgh, and went to work in his native land in 1890. Four years later, Mr. Hutchinson came to Hawaii, arriving here in October, 1894, and began the career which in 20 years carried him to his present responsible position. Mr. Hutchinson was an overseer for the Hilo Sugar Co., 1894-6; overseer, Pepeekeo Sugar Co., 1896-1900, and after a visit to Scotland returned in December, 1900, and resumed work as an overseer for the Hakalau Plantation Co., where he remained until January, 1902. In the latter year Mr. Hutchinson began his long association with the Laupahoehoe Sugar Co., as team overseer from 1902 to 1910 and head overseer, 1910-15. In March, 1915, he was appointed manager of the plantation. Mr. Hutchinson is a member of Kilauea Lodge, No. 330, F. & A.M. He married Jean Clapperton, Oct. 17, 1910, in Honolulu.
