Nellist HORACE JOHNSON, Corporation Official. Closely connected for a quarter of a century with the technical phases of sugar production, Horace Johnson, vice- president and a director of C. Brewer & Co., Ltd., brought to his work in the advancement of Hawaii’s primary industry the training of a chemist and engineer. One of his recent important achievements was the selection and installation of equipment for the new Waimanalo sugar mill, completed in 1923, and now the most modern plant in the Territory. Mr. Johnson came to Hawaii in 1900 from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to take a position as chemist with the Waialua Agricultural Co., where he remained until 1910. The following year he joined the Pepeekeo Sugar Co. in the same capacity and in 1912 was appointed supervising chemist for all the plantations represented by C. Brewer & Co. He was elected vice-president and director of the corporation in 1919. He is also a director of the Hawaiian Agricultural Co., Ltd., and the Onomea, Pepeekeo, Honomu, Hilo and Waimanalo sugar companies. Born at Newburyport, Mass., Aug. 12, 1878, Mr. Johnson is the son of Harrison G. and Harriet (Peabody) Johnson. He was educated at the high schools of Abilene, Kansas, and Newburyport, entering the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with the class of 1901. Mr. Johnson and Edna Anderson were married at Honolulu, Dec. 22, 1903. They have three children, Ralph Blake, Paul Anderson and Evelyn Johnson. Mr. Johnson is a member of the American Chemical Society, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Hawaiian Sugar Planters’ Association, Hawaiian Technologists’ Association and the Hawaiian Engineering Society. He is a member of Honolulu Lodge, No. 409, F. 7 A.M.; Aloha Temple of the Mystic Shrine, and the Oahu Country and the Commercial Clubs, having served as president of the latter during the year 1924-25.
