Nellist JAMES ROBERT JUDD, Surgeon. Dr. James R. Judd, physician and surgeon of Honolulu and veteran surgeon of two wars, is one of the few men of Hawaii to be recognized by the Republic of France through the conferring of the decoration of the Legion of Honor. This notable distinction was bestowed upon him July 14, 1921, in appreciation of his conspicuous services to the French government during the World War. Dr. Judd and his wife went to France in 1915, and both joined the American Ambulance Service, composed of Americans, who, in their enthusiastic support of the allied cause, refused to wait for the decision of President Wilson to bring America into the war. Dr. Judd was made chief surgeon of Juilly Hospital from 1915 to 1917, serving first in Neuilly Hospital. Mrs. Judd worked at her husband’s side throughout the war, nursing in the hospitals to which he was assigned. After completing his medical course in the New York Post-Graduate Medical School in 1903, Dr. Judd returned to his native Honolulu and established a private practice. He is a frequent contributor of articles to surgical journals, a former member of the Board of Health, a former member of the Territorial Board of Medical Examiners, and an ex-trustee of the Honolulu School for Boys. During the Spanish-American war, Dr. Judd was a surgical assistant with the American Red Cross. He is a member of the Hawaiian Medical Society, American Medical Association and a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons. He also holds memberships in the Oahu Country and University Clubs and is an ardent student of French literature, being the possessor of a noteworthy French library. Dr. Judd was born in Honolulu, May 20, 1876, the son of Albert Francis and Agnes (Hall) Boyd Judd. He is a grandson of Dr. G. P. Judd, a prominent figure in the early history of Hawaii and his father was a noted jurist of Hawaii. Dr. Judd’s early education was received at Oahu College, and in 1897 he was graduated from Yale University with the degree of B.A., receiving his M.D. degree from Columbia University in 1901. His internship was served in the New York Hospital, New York City. In 1908 he married Louise Marshall of Chicago and they have two children, James Robert, Jr., and Alice Louise Judd.
