Nellist JOHN K. KAI, Business Man. Combining a career in business with an interest in politics, John K. Kai has been president and manager of the automobile service of the People’s Garage, Ltd., Hilo, for several years and is prominent in the Republican party. Born at Hilo, Hawaii, April 14, 1878, son of John and Kanealoha Kai, he was educated at St. Mary’s School, Hilo, and began work in the transportation business with his father in 1892. After ten years he was selected to be deputy county clerk of the Island of Hawaii, an office he occupied until 1908 and was then county clerk until 1915. Meanwhile he had served as campaign manager for the Republican party on Hawaii and was territorial and county committeeman in 1908. In 1919 he was a member of the House of Representatives. In 1907 he was one of the organizers of the National Guard of Hawaii units at Hilo. From 1910 until 1915 he was in the real estate business and in 1916 he established an automobile garage at Hilo. This was incorporated June 1, 1920, as the People’s Garage, and he was made president and manager. Mr. Kai married Annie Akamu in Hilo on Dec. 22, 1903, and they have five children, Ernest Akamu, John, Paul, Albert and George Kai. He is a Forester, a member of Kamehameha Lodge, the Hilo Board of Trade and the Native Sons of Hawaii.
