Nellist DAVID KALAKAUA, Last Prince of Hawaii. King of Hawaii today, if monarchy were still in existence, would have been the destiny of David Kalakaua, son of the late Prince David Kawananakoa and Princess Abigail Wahiikaahuula Kawananakoa. Descendant and the last male member of a long line of royal ancestors, inheriting the title of Prince from his father, who was created Prince of the Kalakaua Dynasty, young David Kalakaua, upon his return from mainland schools in 1924, began laying the foundation for a career among his people and, with that motive in view, he entered the employ of Ewa plantation to study the details of the sugar business. He was born in Honolulu, March 10, 1904, at the old home of the Kawananakoa family in Pensacola St., and was named for his granduncle, the late King David Kalakaua. He received his early education at Punahou and the Honolulu Military Academy. From Honolulu he was sent to the Fay School at Southboro, Mass., later attending the Taft School at Watertown, Conn., and the Belmont Military Academy at Belmont, Calif. On his mother’s side, David Kalakaua is a grandson of the late James Campbell, one of the pioneers of the sugar industry in Hawaii. He is at present living with his mother in Hawaii.
