Nellist ARTHUR RIPONT KELLER, Engineer. For more than 15 years Professor Arthur R. Keller has occupied the chair of civil engineering at the College of Hawaii and its successor, the University of Hawaii, but he also has found time to devote to the solution of many problems of public welfare. He has been a member of the Territorial Board of Health, two terms; Territory Sanitary Commission; commission to frame the code of sanitary regulations for Hawaii, 1911-1916; one of the three engineers appointed to design a sewer system for Honolulu, 1920, and is a member of the City Planning Commission. He arrived in Hawaii in September, 1909, to accept the professorship of civil engineering at the College of Hawaii, now a university. Born July 28, 1882, at Buffalo, N.Y., he is the son of William M. and Louisa (Ripont) Keller. His education was received in the grammar and high schools of Buffalo and at the following universities: Carnell, C. E.; National University Law School, LL.B.; Massachusetts Institute of Technology, M.S., and Harvard University, S.M.C.E. Prior to his arrival at Honolulu, Professor Keller had been assistant engineer, C.C.C. & St. L.R.R.; engineer for the N.Y.C.R.R.; junior engineer in reconstruction of the Washington Barracks of the Army War College, 1904-06, most of the time in charge; assistant manager, Alabama Marble Co., Gantts Quarry, Ala., 1906-1908, and engineer of construction, Carborundum Co., 1908- 1909. He also spent two years as assistant engineer for construction on the Hilo Railway. He was commissioned a captain, engineers, U.S.A. Reserve Corps, June 13, 1917, trained at Camps Lee and Humphreys; transferred to material section, office director-general of military railroads; transferred to the equipment section, troop division, office chief of engineers. He was discharged July 23, 1919, with the rank of captain, Engineer Reserve Corps, and was promoted later to his present rank of major in the reserve. Professor Keller is a member of Sigma Nu national fraternity and the Commercial Club. He married Lora T. Keegan on Oct. 20, 1908.
