Nellist JOHN RICHARD KELLETT, Captain of Detectives. Detection of crime in Honolulu and the maintenance of law and order have occupied John R. Kellett since 1909. Entering the police department in that year as a special detective, he has advanced to the head of the detective bureau, receiving the appointment Dec. 26, 1923. Born in Honolulu, July 9, 1882, Captain Kellett is the son of P. D. and Helen (Marble) Kellett. His grandfather, John Kellett, was a pioneer resident of Kauai and his father, who died in 1917, was in the shipping department of Theo H. Davies & Co., Ltd., for more than forty years. Upon leaving Iolani College, Captain Kellett entered the employ of Makaweli plantation on Kauai and for a number of years represented H. R. Macfarlane on that island as a shipping agent, operating the schooners Twilight, Malolo, Wailua and Ada, later entering the employ of the Mutual Telephone Co. in Honolulu. In 1908 he resigned as purser with the Inter-Island Steam Navigation Co. to become clerk of the printing committee, House of Representatives, in the session of 1909, holding this position until he entered the detective bureau. Captain Kellett and Julia Akau wee married in Honolulu, March 2, 1904. He is a member of the Order of Kamehameha, Native Sons of Hawaii, Lunalilo Circle and Modern Order of Phoenix.
