Nellist SAMUEL B. KEMP, Lawyer and Jurist. As assistant United States attorney, judge of the Circuit Court, and associate justice of the Supreme Court, Samuel B. Kemp has served Hawaii with distinction during the nine years of his residence in Honolulu. Beginning the practice of his profession at Austin, Tex., in 1900, Mr. Kemp was judge of Coke county, Texas, from 1914 to 1916, and in that year came to Honolulu to become assistant United States attorney. A year later he was appointed judge of the Circuit Court by the late President Woodrow Wilson and the following year ascended the Supreme Court bench as associate justice, remaining in that high judicial office until 1922, when he retired to private practice in partnership with S. C. Huber, former United States attorney for Hawaii. In addition to his legal activities, Mr. Kemp is president and director of the Hawaii Lumber Co., Ltd. He is a Mason and Shriner. Born Dec. 26, 1871, at Austin, Tex., Mr. Kemp is the son of James B. and Eliza S. (Woodward) Kemp. He was educated in the public schools of Texas, the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas, and in 1900 was granted his LL.B. degree by the University of Texas. In 1904 he married May S. Hope and they have one daughter, Dorothy Kemp, now a student at Punahou School.
