Nellist CHARLES HENRY KLUEGEL, Civil Engineer. Engineering work on various large water, railroad and irrigation projects has claimed the greater portion of Charles H. For the next twenty years he handled many large engineering projects on the Pacific Coast, including river and tide land surveys, reclamation of overflowed lands, irrigation projects and surveys for the water supply of San Francisco. He was also locating engineer on the Pacific line of the Mexican Central Railway and on the Northern Pacific Railroad, and he also worked on the location, construction and maintenance of several minor railways. In October, 1888, Mr. Kluegel came to Hawaii and became chief engineer of the Oahu Railway & Land Co., and later the Hilo Railroad Co., serving in those important positions from 1888 to 1906. Mr. Kluegel was closely associated with the late B. F. Dillingham in all of the latter’s projects and enterprises in the Territory. He also was engineer on the Oahu plantation at its very beginning, and in 1905 did engineering work for the Kauai Electric Co. From 1907 to 1909 he was assistant superintendent of public works, and for the next four years was chief engineer of the Hilo Railroad, working on the Hamakua extension. From 1913 to 1916 he served as inspecting and consulting engineer of the Waiahole Water Co., and for the following two years was inspector on the Hilo and Kahului breakwaters. In 1918 he returned to the Oahu Railway & Land Co. and has been chief engineer of the system since that time. Born in Newburgh, Ohio, on Feb. 27, 1847, Mr. Kluegel is the son of Ferdinand and Charlotte (Ehinger) Kluegel. He was educated in Cleveland High School, and Union College, Schenectady, N.Y., where he was graduated as a civil engineer in 1867. In 1874 he married Mary Taylor in San Rafael, Calif., and they have four children, George Taylor, Harry Allardt, May T. and Alice B. Kluegel (deceased).
