Nellist ERIC ALFRED KNUDSEN, Rancher. The call of the soil drew Eric A. Knudsen away from his chosen profession—the law—after he had received his legal degree and had been admitted to the bar in Hawaii, and he has devoted himself to ranch management and to public affairs for a quarter of a century. He was president of the territorial senate for two sessions. He was born at Waiawa, Kauai, on July 29, 1872, the son of Valdemar and Annie (Sinclair) Knudsen, and the grandson of Knud Knudsen, who was president of Norway from 1814 to 1818, and of Capt. Francis Sinclair, R.N. He was educated at Mason’s School, Auckland, New Zealand; in Vienna and Berlin, and at Chauncey Hall, Boston, and received a bachelor’s degree from Harvard University in 1894, being graduated from the Harvard Law School three years later. Mr. Knudsen entered the law office of John Murray Marshall in 1897 and was admitted to the Massachusetts bar in 1898. He returned to Hawaii two years later and was admitted to the bar of the Territory immediately, but did not practice, preferring to accept the managership of Knudsen Bros. ranch at Kekaha, a position he has held since. He served as vice-speaker of the territorial house of representatives in 1903, as speaker in the 1905 session and chairman of the judiciary committee in 1909. The voters of Kauai sent him to the senate at the following election and in the 1911 and 1913 sessions he was president of the senate. His other public offices include the position of school commissioner from Kauai between 1915 and 1920, and at present he is a county supervisor. Mr. Knudsen is a member of Choate Chapter, Phi Delta Phi, the national legal fraternity; the University Club, Honolulu; Pacific Club, Honolulu; Oahu Country Club, Waimea Literary Association and the Bar Association of Hawaii. Mr. Knudsen married Cecilie L’Orange of Christiania, Norway, on Sept. 15, 1905. They have four children, three daughters and a son, Alexandra, Valdemar L’Orange, Anne Cecilie and Elizabeth Knudsen.
