Nellist JOSEPH HEWAHEWA KUNEWA, Public Official. As assessor of the second tax division, Maui, since 1908, and a former clerk of the registry of conveyances and a clerk of Oahu prison, Joseph H. Kunewa has been mainly engaged in public activities since 1896, when he was first appointed a clerk of the conveyances registry. From 1898 to 1903 he was assistant bookkeeper of the Honolulu Plantation Co., Oahu, and for the next five years served as a deputy tax assessor at Ewa and Waianae. Mr. Kunewa is also auditor and director of the Maui Securities Co., Ltd. Born in Honolulu, Sept. 8, 1877, he is the son of Kaulei and Victoria Poomanu (Palau) Kunewa. He attended the Maui public schools and St. Louis College, Honolulu. In 1918 he married Mary Hoffmann of Wailuku, Maui, and they have three children, Marjorie H., J. Hoffmann and Urban E. Kunewa. Mr. Kunewa is a past master of Maui Lodge of Masons, a Shriner, and a member of the Maui Chamber of Commerce and the Maui County Fair and Racing Association.
