Nellist BERNARD ALBERT LANDES, Department Manager. Backed by four years of business experience gained in Europe, Bernard A. Landes came to Hawaii in 1911, arriving at Honolulu on October 10 and the following day entered the employment of the Hoffschlaeger Co., Ltd., as a salesman. He became manager of the company’s Hilo branch in May, 1913, and in January, 1916, accepted a position as manager of the drygoods department of H. Hackfeld & Co.’s Hilo branch, which he still holds with the American Factors, Ltd., successor of the Hackfeld firm. Mr. Landes was born in Bernburg, Germany, March 11, 1888, the son of Bernard and Laura (Jahn) Landes and was educated in his native land. He was with August Polich, Leipzig, Germany, 1907-9, and Rudolph Hertzog, Berlin, 1909-11, both in the export drygoods business. He is a member of Kilauea Lodge, No. 330, F. & A.M.; Hilo Lodge, No. 759, B.P.O.E.; a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason and Shriner, Aloha Temple, and is a member and manager of the Hilo Yacht Club.
