Nellist L. DAVID LARSEN, Plantation Manager. A decade of special research work with a view to discovering means of increasing the yield and decreasing production costs on sugar plantations of Hawaii preceded the appointment in 1918 of L. David Larsen as manager of the Kilauea Sugar Plantation Co. After graduation from the Massachusetts Agricultural College at Amherst, Mass., with the degree of B.S., in 1908, he came to the islands as plant pathologist at the Hawaiian Sugar Planters’ Association experiment station in Honolulu. He transferred to the agricultural department of the same organization in 1915 and was appointed chief agriculturist the next year. Two years later, on Jan. 1, 1918, he became manager of Kilauea plantation. Born Sept. 18, 1886, at Stockholm, Sweden, he is the son of Emil and Marie (Freeman) Larsen, who came to the United States in 1892. He was educated in the grammar schools of Peekskill, N.Y., and Bridgeport, Conn., and was graduated from the Bridgeport High School in preparation for his course at Amherst. Mr. Larsen married Katherine Wood of California on March 31, 1917, and they have five children, Ingrid, David Wood, Katherine, Norma and Margit Larsen. He is a member of Kappa Sigma national fraternity, Phi Kappa Phi, the national scientific honorary fraternity; the Hawaiian Chemists’ Association, and the Commercial Club of Honolulu. In addition to his other interests, Mr. Larsen is president and a director of the Garden Island Motors, Ltd., Lihue, Kauai; was president of the Kauai chamber of Commerce in 1924 and a member of the Republican Central Committee in 1922.
