Nellist HOWARD WHEALTON LAWS, Contractor. A contemporary and acquaintance in Alaska of Jack London, Robert Service and Rex Beach, who have preserved in literature the glamour of the gold rush days of the late 90’s, Howard W. Laws, roofing contractor, in later years chose Hawaii as a field for his business activities. At first a pioneer in the moving picture business here, Mr. Laws after a considerable absence from the islands, returned to Honolulu and established his present successful enterprises. He had the roofing contracts for the new wharves at Hilo, Kahului wharf at Maui, the new Castle & Cooke building, the new Queen’s Hospital building and other important structures. He handles a vast volume of plantation business, and was the builder of the Kewalo Marine Railway. Born at Farmington, Del., Dec. 14, 1880, Mr. Laws is the son of George A. and Mary E. Laws. He received his education in the schools of Delaware and later studied shipbuilding while in the employ of Harling-Hollingsworth, shipbuilders, Bloomington, Delaware. With the discovery of gold in Alaska, Mr. Laws answered the “call of the North” and sought treasure in the Yukon with some success. After several years in Alaska he sought new fields, came to Hawaii in 1914 and built the Park Theater, launching an enterprise which later became a nucleus of the present Consolidated Amusement Co., Ltd. Leaving his interests here in the hands of others in 1916, he went to the Orient, going later to Egypt and finally returned to the mainland, and after revisiting Alaska entered the roofing contracting business in San Francisco, where he was located until 1913, when he again came to Honolulu and has since resided here. Mr. Laws has served as a member of the Fish and Game Commission and is a member of the Industrial Accident Board. He is an Elk and a member of the Commercial Club and Chamber of Commerce.
