Nellist KARL CLAYTON LEEBRICK, Educator. Coming to Hawaii in September, 1920, to become head of the department of history and political science at the University (formerly College) of Hawaii, Prof. Karl C. Leebrick has since taken an active part in the civic life of Honolulu. Before coming to the islands he was in the department of history of the University of California. He is the author, among other works, of “The English Capture of Manila in 1763 and the Government of the Philippine Islands by the East India Company,” and “Fundamental American Ideals and Institutions.” He was president of the Honolulu Ad Club, 1924-25; director of the Commercial Club, 1922-25; director of the Rotary Club, 1924-25; is a Mason and a member of the Faculty Club of the University of California. A deep student of politics, he is an active member and leader of the Young Men’s Republican Educational Club. Professor Leebrick was born in Burlington, Iowa, Oct. 20, 1885, the son of John Philip and Mary Detweiler (Rosenberger) Leebrick. His education was received in the public schools of Tempe, Ariz., Tempe Normal School, 1902-06, and the University of California, where he received his B. S. degree in 1911, his M.S. degree in 1913 and his Ph.D. degree in 1916. Professor Leebrick was a holder of the Native Sons’ Traveling Fellowship to Spain in 1915-16, doing historical research work for the University of California. At the invitation of the Japanese-America Society of Japan, issued by Viscount Shibusawa, he visited Japan in 1924 and spoke before universities, government officials and groups of leading business men of that nation. Following this, Professor Leebrick visited China and other countries of the Orient in the interests of the Pan-Pacific Non-Political Conference held in Honolulu in the summer of 1925, having held a “roving commission” for this purpose. He is a member of the Historical Commission of the Territory of Hawaii, composed of three and established by the legislature of 1920. On Sept. 25, 1913, Professor Leebrick married Beryl Mae Fountaine.
