Nellist GLADSTONE SCOTT LEITHEAD, Transportation Superintendent. Coming to Hawaii from Scotland in 1901, Gladstone S. Leithead, now superintendent of transportation and warehouse foreman for the American Factors, Ltd., has had more than twenty years of business experience in Honolulu. After working for a short time as an overseer at Kahuku Plantation, Mr. Leithead became manager of the Waialua Soda Works in 1901, remaining in that position four years. Employed until 1909 in a similar capacity with the Consolidated Soda Works, Mr. Leithead at that time branched into business for himself, buying an interest in the Arctic Soda Works and continuing with the firm as a senior partner until 1914, when it was amalgamated with the Rycroft Soda Works. He was with the present Rycroft Arctic Co., Ltd., until 1918 as vice-president and manager. Entering the employ of H. Hackfeld & Co., Mr. Leithead became warehouse foreman and continued with the company after its reorganization as the American Factors, Ltd. He was appointed to his present position in 1922. Fishing is Mr. Leithead’s hobby, and in 1923 he caught a 17 ½-lb. oio with rod and line, a record which still stands for Hawaiian sportsmen. Born in Selkirkshire, Scotland, July 1, 1880, Mr. Leithead is the son of William and Helen (Scott) Leithead. He received his education in the government schools of Scotland. Mr. Leithead and Margaret Cullen were married in Honolulu in Dec., 1902. They have six children, William, Jack, Arthur, Helen, Wilhelmina and Gladstone Scott Leithead, Jr. Mr. Leithead is a Mason and a past exalted ruler of the Honolulu Lodge of Elks, and was a delegate to the Elks’ national convention held at Atlantic City, N.J., in July, 1922.
