Nellist LEWIS THORNTON LYMAN, Agriculturist. L. Thornton Lyman, agriculturist for Libby, McNeill & Libby, pineapple growers and canners, has been engaged in work of that nature since his graduation from the University of Illinois in 1915 with a B. S. degree, with the exception of a period of World War service. Returning to the islands from college, he was with the Hawaiian Sugar Planters’ Association in Honolulu until 1917, when he entered the first officers’ training camp at Schofield Barracks, was commissioned a first lieutenant in the 2nd U.S. Infantry and served with that unit at Camp Fremont, Calif., and Camp Dodge, Iowa. Upon his release from military service in 1919, he returned to Hawaii and worked as an agriculturist for the Sugar Planters’ Association on Maui. From Sept., 1919, until Dec., 1921, he was a section overseer with the Pioneer Mill Co. and in Dec., 1921, he was a section overseer with the agricultural work of the colony established there by the Hawaiian Homes Commission. In July, 1924, he assumed his present position with Libby, McNeill & Libby, and is engaged in agricultural research work, both in the field and in the laboratory. Born in Hilo, Hawaii, on Sept. 20, 1892, he is the son of Rufus A. and Rebecca (Brickwood) Lyman. His father was an attorney and sugar planter, and for a number of years was circuit judge for the county of Hawaii. Mr. Lyman attended the Hilo public schools and University of California, before going to the University of Illinois. He is a member of the Sigma Xi fraternity and the University Club.
