Nellist JAMES EMMETT MAKINNEY, Business Man. A salesman for four years with the Royal Hawaiian Sales Co., Ltd., and the Auto Service & Supply Co., James E. Makinney entered business for himself in 1923, opening a tire and accessory shop. At the completion of his course in the Kamehameha Schools in 1914, Mr. Makinney took a position with the Hawaiian Sugar Planters’ Association, working and studying in the chemical laboratory with the expectation of becoming a chemist. In 1917 he went to Libby, McNeil & Libby as assistant chemist, and remained until the intervention of the World War. Enlisting in the First Gas Regiment, he saw active service overseas in the four major engagements of the Meuse, Argonne, St. Mihiel and the second battle of the Marne. Upon returning to Honolulu in March, 1919, Mr. Makinney began the salesmanship work that immediately preceded the opening of his own establishment. Born in Honolulu, Aug. 7, 1895, he is the son of F. W. and Minnie (Hart) Makinney. In 1923 he married Alice Knippenberg.
