Nellist CLIFTON ELMO MAYNE, JR. Automobile Dealer. Clifton E. Mayne, Jr., manager of the Kapaa, Kauai, branch of the von Hamm-Young Co., automobile dealers, was born in Iowa in 1880, the son of Clifton E. and Hattie J. (Knight) Mayne. His early education was received in the grammar schools and high school of Salt Lake City. He attended San Diego business college and then studied two years at the Missouri School of Mines. His first employment was in zinc and lead mining and milling at Joplin, Mo., where he remained two years. The next four years he spent in a zinc concentrating plant at Park City, Utah. He then came to Hawaii in 1908 to accept a position in the hardware department of E. O. Hall & Son, Ltd. He later joined The Lynch Co. in Honolulu, remaining there until his appointment in 1921 as manager of the Kapaa branch of the von Hamm-Young Co., a position he has held since. Mr. Mayne was a member of the 7th California Infantry in 1898 during the Spanish-American war, but transferred to a Utah battery which was sailing for active service in the Philippines. After nine months’ service he was wounded and invalided home. He married Mary Bryne in Salt Lake City in 1903, and they have one child, Phil C. Mr. Mayne is an Elk.
