Nellist ALLEN MARCH NOWELL, Sugar Factor. Allen M. Nowell, secretary-manager of the Sugar Factors Co., Ltd., has been continuously indentified with the sugar industry in Hawaii since 1898, either in actual plantation work or in an executive capacity. Mr. Nowell came to the islands in April, 1898, and for some months was overseer of the Onomea Sugar Co. For the next two years he was head bookkeeper for the Hawaiian Agricultural Co., and in November, 1900, he became liquidating clerk at the custom house. From 1902 to 1906 he served as head bookkeeper for the Waialua Agricultural Co., from 1906 to 1907 as manager of the Wahiawa Water Co., Ltd., from 1908 to 1909 as head bookkeeper for the Wailuku Sugar Co., and in 1909 he joined the Sugar Factors CO., Ltd., as secretary-manager, his present position. For 14 years Mr. Nowell has been treasurer of the University Club. He is president of the Harvard Club of Hawaii (1925) and a member of the Chamber of Commerce, Outrigger Canoe and Oahu Country clubs. Before coming to Hawaii, Mr. Nowell was with the Metropolitan Park Commission in Boston, beginning in 1896. He was born in Cambridge, Mass., Jan. 18, 1875, the son of Joseph S. and Mary Davis (Allen) Nowell. His education was received at Winchester (Mass.) High School, Massachusetts Agricultural College at Amherst, and Harvard University. In 1899 Mr. Nowell married Ruth Moore Taplin of Winchester, Mass., and they have three children, Nelson Taplin Nowell, now ranching in California; Elizabeth Hastings Nowell, at school on the mainland, and Jackson March Nowell, student at Punahou.
