Nellist SAMUEL SMITH ROLPH, Attorney-Trust Officer. An unusual blending of business leadership and practise of law has marked the career of Samuel S. Rolph, treasurer and manager of the First Trust Co., of Hilo, Ltd., and an officer of numerous other corporations, since his arrival in Hawaii in October, 1910, to follow the legal profession. Born at Fargo, North Dakota, Nov. 28, 1886, he is the son of Rollin Thomas and Ella (McClanathan) Rolph. He was educated at the Fredonia State Normal school, Fredonia, N.Y., and at Cornell University, A.B., 1908; LL.B., 1910. He was admitted to practise in New York but immediately after graduation came to Hilo to enter the law offices of C. S. Carlsmith, where he remained for two years. From 1912 to 1915 he was assistant cashier, the First Bank of Hilo, Ltd. He then resumed the practise of law as a partner in Carlsmith and Rolph, serving also as deputy county attorney for Hawaii, 1915-1918. In 1921 Mr. Rolph again gave up the practise of law and accepted his present responsible position. He also is treasurer, Hawaiian Insurance & Guaranty Co., Ltd.; secretary, the Hilo Electric Light Co., Ltd., and a director in the Interurban Electric Co., Ltd., Volcano Stables and Transportation Co., Ltd., and Mana Transportation Co., Ltd., and president of the Hilo Chamber of Commerce (1925). He is a member of Kilauea Lodge No. 330, F. & A.M.; Hilo Lodge No. 759, B. P. O. E. (past exalted ruler); the Hilo Rotary and Yacht clubs, the University club of Honolulu, and Phi Delta Phi national fraternity. Mr. Rolph married Carol Low in Honolulu on September 4, 1915, and they have two children, Samuel Smith, Jr., and Donald Low Rolph.
