Nellist JAMES PEARSE WINNE, Business Executive. A member of the fourth generation of his family in Hawaii and a direct descendant of Asa and Lucy G. Thurston, who came to the islands with the first group of missionaries in 1820, James P. Winne, manager of the merchandise department and a director of Alexander & Baldwin, Ltd., was born in California, July 27, 1889, and removed to Hawaii with his parents when a small child. His father was Jacob Pearse Winne, a California pioneer, born in New York State, and his mother, Lucy (Taylor) Winne, granddaughter of Lucy G. Thurston and a native of Honolulu. Mr. Winne was educated in the Honolulu schools, Punahou and Oahu college, and in 1907 took his first position as a stenographer and clerk with the Sugar Factors Co., Ltd., where he remained for three years, and in 1911 joined Alexander & Baldwin, Ltd., as assistant buyer. Here he gained a knowledge of plantation needs, field equipment, mill supplies and store stocks, and in 1913 he was made buyer, in 1918 assistant manager of the merchandise department and manager in 1922. In 1924 Mr. Winne was elected a director of the corporation. He has been a member of the Board of Harbor Commissioners since December, 1921, is also a member of the maritime affairs committee of the Chamber of Commerce, and since 1922 has served as treasurer of the Republican Territorial Central Committee. He is a member of the Commercial, Pacific and Oahu Country clubs. In 1920 Mr. Winne married Miss Ayleen Campbell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S. A. Campbell of Los Angeles, Calif.
