YATES, Attorney and Legislator. Three lines of endeavor-education, the law, and legislative service-have contributed to the career of Julian R. Yates, who was elected to the territorial legislature for the first time in 1911 and has served as a member of the Hawaii Board of Supervisors since 1913. Born at Kapapala Ranch, Kau, May 3, 1885, he is the son of William J. and Lahap P. Yates. He was educated at the Kamehameha Schools. From 1904 to 1908 Mr. Yates taught school and then studied law in the office of G. F. Maydwell, 1909-1911. He entered politics in 1911 and was elected to the legislature. Two years later he was chosen a supervisor for the Kona district and has since held that office. He was appointed also to his present position of deputy tax assessor for South Kona in April, 1920. During the World War he was a captain in the Second Hawaiian Infantry, U.S.A., from June, 1918, to Feb. 9, 1919, at Schofield Barracks. He is a member of the Hilo Yacht and Kona Civic Clubs. He married Hannah Weeks, Dec. 19, 1908, and they have nine children.
