Nellist JOHN MASON YOUNG, Consulting Engineer, Architect and Educator. Mr. Young was born at Lewisburg, Tenn., Sept. 26, 1874, the son of Rev. Chas. Strong and May (Chalmers) Young. His father and grandfather were Presbyterian ministers and professors at Erskine College, S.C. Both parents descendants of original Scotch English Presbyterians who came to America for religious freedom in 1754 and helped settle the Carolinas. Preparatory education in Florida. In 1893 was master mechanic and superintendent of construction of Hamburg Phosphate Co., then similar positions with two other mining companies. In 1896 matriculated University of Florida, completing four years’ course in two years and receiving B.S. degree in 1898. Served during Spanish War as master machinist (first class) at U. S. Naval Station, Key West, Fla., and after the war became professor of mechanical engineering and head of physics department at University of Florida. Matriculated Cornell University 1901, receiving M.E. degree in 1902. Instructor experimental engineering, Sibley College (Cornell), and at same time graduate student in civil and electrical engineering, receiving M.M.E. degree in 1904. During summer vacations while at Cornell designed mill for the Mississippi Portland Cement Co. (1901); employed in engineering department American Bell Telephone Co., N.Y. (1902); and structural draftsman with Purdy & Henderson, Chicago (1903). From 1904-08, assistant structural engineer, Westinghouse, Church, Kerr Co., engineers, New York City, during which time he designed and followed the construction of a large amount and great variety of structural steel work and concrete work distributed over many contracts and in different parts of the country, such as bridges, buildings, cableways, etc., designer of power plant structure for Pennsylvania Railroad terminal, New York City. Married Anne Montgomery in Pittsburg, Pa., Oct. 23, 1905; three children, Annie May, Rosalie Leslie and Marjorie Mason. Came to Honolulu 1908 as professor of engineering, College (now University) of Hawaii, and as engineer for the college during construction of its original buildings in Manoa. In 1908 organized Pacific Engineering Co., Ltd., of which he has ever since been the president and chief engineer. This company has constructed the Theo. H. Davies building, Honolulu Central Y.M.C.A., Hawaii Theatre, Scottish Rite Temple, Christian Church, Blaisdell Block, Hawaiian Pineapple cannery, Libby, McNeil & Libby cannery, California Packing Corporation, Young Hotel Annex and many other prominent business and industrial buildings in Honolulu. Mr. Young has been consulting engineer for the Hilo Railroad and Kahului Railroad on design and construction of bridges and tunnels; consulting engineer Pearl Harbor dry dock, Waiahole tunnel, Hawaiian Pineapple Co., Ltd., California Packing Corporation, Hawaiian Fertilizer Co., Ltd., Oahu Ice & Cold Storage Co., etc. Chairman, building committee 1919 Territorial Fair; one of a committee of two who drafted Honolulu building ordinance. Expert engineering witness for the government on evaluation Honolulu Rapid Transit & Land Co. (1915); also expert engineering witness in numerous cases before circuit court and territorial Supreme Court. Architect for bank building for the Bank of Bishop & Co., Ltd., and the Bishop Trust Co., Ltd. Mr. Young is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (New York, 1901); American Association for the Advancement of Science (Washington, 1906); American Society for Testing Materials (Philadelphia, 1908); Royal Society of Arts (London, 1913); National Aeronautic Association (Washington, 1924); Graduate Club, University of Florida; Graduate Club of Cornell; Sigma Xi (Ithaca, ’02); Sigma Nu (Gamma Theta Chapter); Florida Club of Hawaii; Honolulu Chamber of Commerce; Engineering Societies’ Club; University Club; Rotary Club; Ad Club; Commercial Club; Oahu Country Club; Faculty University of Hawaii (since 1908); Past President (two terms) Hawaiian Engineering Association; President Cornell Club of Hawaii; Commissioner Public Instruction; Member City Planning Commission; Director Pan-Pacific Union and Automobile Club; Elk; Knight Templar; Shriner and 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason.
