Spring -- In a battle of canoe fleets off the north coast of Hawai;i, cannon fire directed by YOUNG and DAVIS is used to effect. March 20. The Princess Royal. captured by Spanish in 1789 an now under Spanish colors, arrives off the Big Island under MANUEL QUIMPER; COLNETT, former captain of the vessel, almost comes to blows with Quimper. May 20. The American brigantine Hope, under JOSEPH INGRAHAM, arrives in Islands. Summer -- KEOUA KUAHUULA meets his death at the heiau of Kawaihai under the orders of KAMAHAMEHA I. October -- The American brigantine Lady Washington arrives under JOHN KENDRICK. October 4. The French trading ship, Solide, under ETIENNE MARCHAND, passes through the Islands. U.S.-- Washington signs a bill to charter the Bank of the United States. The opposing views of Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton presage growig tendency to form national political parties. 1792 -- OLIVER HOLMES arrives on American ship Margaret. March 5 -- The ships of GEORGE VANCOUVER arrive at Kealakekua Bay on first of three annual visits to Islands. 1793 -- February. The British trading ship Butterworth arrives in the islands under WILLIAM BROWN, who may be the first captain to enter Honolulu Harbor. February 14. - VANCOUVER makes second visit and on te Big Island lands the first cattle seen in Hawai'i. U.S. -- In the Intenational turmoil aroused by the French Revolution, President Washington proclaims America's neutrality. The invention of the cotton gin by Eli Whitney greatly advances the agriculture of the southern states. 1794 -- MATAIO KEKUANAOA, father of two kings and two princesses of the realm is born. Probable birth of MIRIAM AUHEA KEKAULUOHI. January 9. -- VANCOUVER ships make third visit; an informal cession of the islands to Great Britain is made on February 25. February -- The first vessel of foreign design is built in the islands, the 36 foot Britannia, constructed by Vancouver's carpenters for the fleet of Kamehmeha I. Summer -- The death of KAHEKILI, who divides his kingdom between his brother KAEO and his son KALANIKUPULE, leads to fatal strife between the two heirs. December 12. -- KALANIKUPULE wins a battle against KAEO near Pearl Harbor with the aid of CAPTAINS WILLIAM BROWN and JOHN KENDRICK; Kendrick is killed by accidental firing of a loaded cannon. 1795 -- May. A victory in battle at Nuuanu Pali on Oahu enables the invading forces of KAMEHAMEHA to unite all the islands, except Kauai under his rule. U.S. - A treaty with Spain defines Unired States boundries and gives Americans free navigation of the Mississippi River to New Orleans. 1796 -- January 1 -- The British sloop of war Providence, under WILLIAM ROBERT BROUGHTON, brings the first grapes to the islands. April -- KAMEHAMEHA I attempts the conquest of Kauai but his fleet is shattered by a storm. October 31 -- The snow ARTHUR from Bengal under HENRY BARBER is wrecked on what is known thereafter as Barbers Point. December 2.-- The Boston trading ship Otter arrives under EBENEZER DORR; the first officer is PIERRE FRANCOIS PERON. U.S. --Washington publishes his Farwell Address when retiring from the Presidency. 1797. LIHOLIHO, the future Kamehameha II, is born at Hilo. 1798. GEORGE P. KAUMUALII, son of the king of Kauai, is born. DEBORAH KAPULE, future queen of KAUMUALII, is born U.S. December 14. Washington dies at Mount Vernon estate. 1801. AMASA DELANO makes first visit to Hawai'i. 1803. The first horses brought to Hawai'i are landed on te Big Island by the American Brig Lelia Byrd under WILLIAM SHALER; RICHARD CLEVELAND is supercargo. U.S. -- Negotiating the Louisiana Purchase from France for $15,000,000, the nation doubles its domain. 1804. A great plague, probably bubonic, ravages the islands, kills KAMEEIAMOKU and other chiefs, and prevents the invasion of Kauai by the peleliu fleet of KAMEHAMEHA I. June 7. The first ships of the exploring Imperial Russian service arrive in the islands. Nadeshda under ADAM JOHANN von KRUSENSTERN and Neva under UREY LISIANSKY. 1805. KINAU, mother of KAMEHAMEHA IV and KAMEHAMEHA V and VICTORIA KAMAMALU is born 1806. September -- The Boston trading ship O'Cain under JONATHON WINSHIP arrives . U.S. -- Noah Webster publishes his influential American Dictionary. 1809. January 27, The Russian ship Neva under L.A. HAGEMEISTER reurns with ARCHIBALD CAMPBELL as a passenger. 1810. April. KAUMUALII makes a forced cession of his island of Kauai to KAMEHAMEHA I. ISAAC DAVIS dies, probably poisoned for giveing a warning to KAUMUALII. 1811. February 13. The trading ship Tonquin arrives under JONATHON THORN, first of three supply ships sent out by JOHN JACOB ASTOR to his settlement at the mouth of the Columbia River. Twelve Hawaiians join the ship to work in Oregon Territory. 1812. Three Boston sea Captains -- JONATHAN WINSHIP, NATHAN WINSHIP, and WILLIAM HEATH DAVIS -- sign a contract with KAEHAMEHA I giving them a monoply in the export of valuable sandlewood. U.S. -- The Congress declares war against Great Britian to defend the freedom of te seas for American vessels, and the U.S.S. Constitution sinks a British frigate. 1814. March 17 - KAUIKEAOULI, the future KAMEHAMEHA III is born . May 23 -- The British privateer SIR ANDREW HAMMOND, captured by Americans during the war, enters Honolulu Harbor; at sea, it is retaken by the British ship Cherub onJune 13 and returned to Honolulu. The captured Hammond is the first war vessel flying the American flag to enter the harbor. 1815. NAHIENAENA, sister of two kings is born. JOHN PALMER PARKER settles at Waimea, Hawai'i, under contract with KAMEHAMEHA I to shoot wild cattle for hides and meat; this is the origin of the thriving PARKER RANCH of modern times. 1816. January 1. - A resident musical group, for King's Oahu Band, performs for some foreigners. May 21. KAUMUALII on Kauai, at urging of DR. GEORG ANTON SCHEFFER, signs a treasonous document putting the island under the protection of the CZAR of RUSSIA. November 21. - The Russian Navy brig Rurik, under OTTO von KOTZEBUE, arrives off the island of Hawai'i and crew --including LOUIS CHORIS, ADELBERT von CHAMISSO, and JOHAN FRIEDRICH ESCHSCHOLTZ -- are entertained by KAMEHAMEHA I. 1817. KALAMA, future queen, is born. The Hawai'ian flag is first flown in a foreign port by ALEXANDER ADAMS at Macao. May.-- KAUMUALII renounces Russian sovereignty over the island of Kauai, and SCHEFFER leaves for Macao on July 7. August 12.-- JAMES HUNNEWELL makes first visit to Hawai'i when Bordeaux Packet arrives under ANDREW BLANCHARD. 1818. February 17. - OPUKAHAIA ( HENRY OBOOKIAH ) dies at Cornwall, Connecticut, inspiring the origin of the first American mission to the Sandwich Islands. May. -- Santa Rosa, a pirate ship, reaches Hawai'i; it is recovered by HYPOLITE BOUCHARD, who arrives in September under command of PETER CORNEY. October 20.-- The Russian sloop of war Kamchatka, under V.M. GOLOVNIN arrives in the islands. U.S. -- Transatlantic packet ship lines are established by New York merchants. 1819. Sugar is manufactured by FRANCISCO de PAULA MARIN. May 8.-- KAMEHAMEHA I dies at Kailua, Hawai'i, his son LIHOLIHO is proclaimed KAMEHAMEHA II on May 20. August 8.-- The French corvette Uranie arrives in the islands under LOUIS de FREYCINET with JACQUES ARAGO as draftsman. September 29.-- The first Whale ships arrive in the islands--- the Balena of New Bedford under EDMUND GARDNER and the Equator of Newburyport under ELISHA FOLGER, at anchor in Kealakekua Bay. Crews allowed shore leave. 70% of crews were black slaves. The Balena catches a whale that yields 110 barrels of oil. October 23.-- The brig Thaddeaus, under ANDREW BLANCHARD, sails from Boston with the First Company of American Missionaries to the Sandwich Islands. November.-- KAMEHAMEHA II and advisors openly overthrow the old pagan system of religion; a rebellon o conservatives under KEKUOKALANI on the Big Island is put down by KALANIMOKU. 1820. The Nantucket ship Maro under JOSEPH ALLEN, is the first whale ship to enter Honolulu Harbor. ALLEN later discovers the rich " on Japan " whaling grounds. March 31. - The First Company of American Misionaries arrives off the island of Hawai;i, along with four Hawai'ian youths, to begin Congressional mission work in the islands. July 16.-- LEVI SARTWELL LOOMIS, son of ELISHA LOOMIS, is first white child born in the Sandwich Islands.
