Kelley ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Part 3-- Hawai'ian Chronology and The United States. ++ 1821 -- Kamehameha II sails for Kauai and brings back KAMUALII to Honolulu as a hostage to pledge loyalty to the Royal Family. KAMUALII is married to KA'AHUMANU. Sandlewood exports by American vessels to Canton are over 21,000 piculs ( 1,400 tons ) annually at a price of $8 per picul. KA'AHUMANU declares all Catholics to be banished to Kaho'olawe; the island becomes a penal colony. September 15. The first Christian meetinghouse is dedicated in Honolulu on the site of the present Kawaiahao Church. American Missionaries make the first systematic weather observations over an extended period of time. ++ 1822 -- January 7.-- The first printing in Hawai'i and the North Pacific region produced by ELISHA LOOMIS on his second-hand Ramage Press March 29. The British sloop Mermaid arrives with WILLIAM ELLIS, DANIEL TYERMAN, and GEORGE BENNET of the London Missionary Society aboard, in company with the Prince Regent, a 70 ton schooner built at Port Jackson, New South Wales, which is presented to the King to fulfill a promise made by VANCOUVER to KAMEHAMEHA I. This schooner was fully armed and equiped. Presented by CAPT KENT. CHARLES REED BISHOP is born. He later married the great-grandaughter of KAMEHAMEHA I, BERNICE PAUAHI. First printed laws are issued, aimed at foreigners disturbing the peace and sailors deserting their ships. April - The brig Hermes is wrecked on what is later called Pearl and Hermes Reef; JAMES ROBINSON sails to Honolulu to seek aid and remains in Honolulu. First " dram shops " are observed in Honolulu, the predecessors to bars. JOSEPH NAVARRO of New York digs Honolulu's first water producing well. First modern vessel anchors at Nihoa Island. KA'AHUMANU orders the burning of 102 idols, First celebration of American Independence, July 4th in Honolulu First Christian marriage in islands unites THOMAS HOPU< missionary youth, and bride DELIA on August 11th. First Christian burial of a native. The presence of the Surinam. a burrowing or bicolored cockroach, first officially recorded in the Islands. First printing in Hawai'i produced by ELISHA LOOMIS on his second press with Chief KEEAUMOKU pulling the lever that puts pressure on the form, resulting in the first page of an elementary Hawai'ian language spelling book. Oct 19. The first chiefs to marry are HOAPILI KANE and KALAKUA. ++ 1823 -- April 27. The ship Thames under REUBEN CLASBY arrives with the Second Company of American Missionaries. May 1, The Nantucket whale ship Globe first arrives in Honoluluunder THOMAS WORTH; the worst mutiny in whaling history erupts at midnight, January 25-26 and another led by SANUEL COMSTOCK near Fanning Island. September 16.-- The queen mother KEOPUOLANI is baptized on her death bed. She was the first Hawai'ian to receive this Protestant rite. She was the mother of Kamehameha II, Kamehameha III and NAHIENAENA. Reverand WILLIAM ELLIS makes the first written record of volcanic activity whehe describes Kileuea Crater and takes down information from Hawai'ians about the past eruptions, going back to 1750, 1790 and 1801. Mission printing press moved from a grass roofed hut at Kawaiaha"o to the first building used regularly as a printing office. NA HIMENI HAWAI"I ( Hymns of Hawai'i ) is the first book published in the islands. Law proclaimed for public observance of the Sabbath. Rev. MR.ELLIS arrive from Tahiti. LIHOLIHO hosts a festival commemorating the dath of KAMEHAMEHA I. HOAPILIKANE appointed governor of Maui and is married by REV. RICHARDS to KAHEIHEIMALIE, also known as HOAPILIWAHINE, a widow of KAMEHAMEHA and sister to KA"AHUMANU. November 27. - KAMEHAMEHA II and party depart on the whale ship L'Aigle to visit England. U.S. -- The Monroe Doctrine warns European nations not to interfere with affairs in Western Hemisphere. ++ 1824.-- JAMES KEKELA, first ordained Protestant minister of Hawai'ian blood is born. May -- The death of KAUMUALII leaves the island of Kauai under the Crown, thus uniting all major islands as a kingdom. August -- GEORGE P. KAUMUALII, son of above, leads a brief revolt ad spends the rest of his life as a prisoner. More than 100 whaling ships visit the islands in this year. Reports of many sailor desertations. Too many to capture. S.REYNOLDS appointed to register the merchant ships, whalers and foreign navel or survey ships arriving in Honolulu. until 1843. Mangoes introduced around this time by DON FRANCISCO de PAULA MARIN from Mexico and by CAPT JOHN MEEK. December -- Chiefess KAPIOLANI defies the goddess PELE at Kilauea Crater. December 13 -- The Russian Imperial Navy frigate Predpiyatie, under OTTO von KOTZEBUE, arrives in the islands, makes return visit on September 12, 1825. ++ 1825 -- Sugar, Rum, and coffee are produced on the plantation of CHIEF BOKI in Manoa Valley by JOHN WILKINSON. Specimens had come from Rio de Janeiro, Brazill. ( Coffee ). May 3. -- The British Navy frigate Blonde, with GEORGE ANSON BYRON in command, arrives bearing the bodies of KAMEHAMEHA II and KAMAMALU ROBERT DAMPIER, artist and daftsman and ANDREW BLOXAM, naturalist, are on the Royal staff. June 6.-- KAUIKEAOULI is procalimed king as KAMEHAMEHA III, with KAAHUMANU as kuhina nui. July 10.-- The first Hawai'ian commoner BARTIMEUS, ( PUAAIKA ) Court dancer for KAMEHAMEHA I, is second to be baptized by the Congregationalist missionaries. The crew of the British Whale ship Daniel, under CAPT. Buckle, upset over missionary inspired restrictions, attack the home of Rev. WILLIAM RICHARDS at Lahina, Maui, but are repulsed. Heleuluhe Place, an arrangemant of grass huts in Honolulu, were built for KAMEHAMEHA III. Chiefs approve Western principle of hereditary landholding. RICHARD CHARLTON, the first British Consul to Hawai'i imports donkeys. WILLIAM K. WARREN builds the WARREN HOUSE, known locally as MAJOR WARREN"S HOTEL,was Hawai'i's first restaurant. U.S. -- ROBERT OWEN, British social reformer, sets up at New Harmony, Indiana, a short lived colectivist colony. ++ 1826.-- PRINCESS RUTH is born. Night-biting mosquitos were introduced to the islands, imported in water casks on te ship Wellington, from San Blas, Mexico. The United States schooner Dolphin arrives, under JOHN PERCIVAL, with WILLIAM LAY and CYRUS HUSSEY, survivors of the Globe mutiny, aboard. The Crew members of the above schooner -- protesting missionary inspired restrictions -- attack the house of KALAIMOKU and REV. MR. HIRAM BINGHAM but are repulsed on Februray 26. The Dolphin is the first American warship to visit the Hawai'ian Islands. October - The United States Sloop of war Peacock, under THOMAS ap CATES- BURY JONES, arrives in Honolulu. The Hawai'ian Kingdom and the United States sign the first of five treaties recognizing the Hawai'ian government and encouraging a commitment to friendship and peace. First written tax law imposed by chiefs under pressure to repay $200,000 sandlewood debts to American taders. CAPT.JAMES HUNNEWELL trades sandlewood with China, starting the business that later becomes C. BREWER & CO,. Church at Kailua, Kona, finished and dedicated. Missionaries standardize Hawai'ian as a written language using an alphabet of seven consonents and five vowels. ++ 1827-- The Comete arrives under CAPT. PLASSARD with three Catholic missionaries abroad; ALEXIS BACHELOT, ABRAHAM ARMAND and PATRICK SHORT. The first baptism of a child of MARIN the Spaniard is peformed on November 30; the first Catholic Chapel is opened in Honolulu. October -- Sailors from the British Whale ship John Palmer , under ELISHA CLARKE, fire Cannon at Missinary hose at Lahaina, Maui. December -- Chiefs agree on five laws, prohibiting murder, theft, rum-selling, prostitution, and gambling. Kiawe tree seeds derived from a Chilian tree growing in the Jardin du Roi in Paris are brought to the islands and are plnted a year later in the Catholic Mission grounds on Fort Street. The first Catholic Missionaries are expelled by KA'AHUMAHU. British Museum opens and as contents are Hawai'ian artifacts such as large cloaks; aprons, helmets, hats, distorted human figures, etc made of feathers from the Sandwich islands as wells as fish lures, bird specimens and wood bowls are displayed. U.S. -- JOSEPH HENRY of New York begins experiments in electricity that contributes much to advances in tis branch of science. The first volume of The Birds of America, is published by JOHN JAMES AUDUBON. ++ 1828 - March 30. The Third Company of American Missionaries arrives on the Parthian, under RICHARD D. BLINN. One hundred and twelve whalng ships arrive this year in Honolulu and 47 whaling ships visit Lahaina. First laws attempting to control licentious relations between whaling ship crews and Hawai'ians enacted under Missionary influence. HUNG TAI builds sugar mill at Wailuku, Maui; it was still operating in 1839 during the rein of KAMEHAMEHA III. Cornerstone of Wainee Church in Lahaina laid, the first stone church built in Hawai'i. Between 30 and 40 Chinese, 11 Africans, and 14 Japanese are among 400 foreigners estimated to be living in Honolulu according to the Council. ++ 1829. -- Government of Kaua'i appoints five persons to positions comparable to that of American " Justice of the Peace." October 2. - The United States Navy corvette Vincennes arrives under WILLIAM FINCH; CHARLES S. STEWART is the Chaplain. December 2. -- BOKI and about five hundred followers and slaves depart to seek sandalwood in the South Pacific in the Kamehameha and the Becker; the Kamehameha is lost at sea and the Becker returns August 3, 1830, with news of the disasters. Large centipedes and scorpions first officially recorded in Hawai'i. ++ 1830.-- Cowboys from Mexican California arrive to teach the Hawai'ians of the Big Island to manage cattle; this is the origin of commercial stock raising in the Islands. The schooner Becket returns to Honolulu from the South Pacific expedition and reports the brig Kamehameha lost and BOKI dead. Disturbances in Honolulu initiated by the party of LILIHA, widow of BOKI and daughter of HOAPILIKANE. KUAKANI, the brother of KA'AHUMANU, is appointed Governor of O'ahu and order is restored. KA'AHUMANU makes a circuit of O'ahu, Maui, and Hawai'i. KA'AHUMANU forbides the art of Hula in public. Sandlewood trees depleted due to the cutting for trade. December 11. -- LOT KAMEHAMEHA, the future KAMEHAMEHA V is born. ++ 1831.-- Estimated population of Hawai'i is 264,160. June 7.-- The Fourth Company of American missionaries arrives on ship New Englander under AVERY F. PARKER. Commercial traffic in Honolulu and Lahaina is conducted entirely in specie according to report, primarily in the coins of the American republic. September-- Lahainaluna Seminary is established on the island of Maui to train young Hawai'ian men to become teachers and preachers.
