Cascade Pioneer, Dec. 12, 1946 

H. S. Bender of Corning, Iowa, father of A. L. Bender, Cascade, died December 
4, in a Creston hospital, as a result of a gunshot wound accidentally 
inflicted while Mr. Bender was repairing a German Luger weapon which his 
nephew had brought from overseas. Mr. Bender was familiar with firearms, 
having worked with them a great deal. The deceased was born in Johnson County 
near Iowa City, July 19, 1864, the son of Sarah and David Bender. He was 
married December 21, 1895, to Miss Sarah Miller, who preceded him in death 
September, 1912. He followed the trade of machinist and was a great lover of 
flowers. Burial was in Walnut Grove cemetery at Corning. He is survived by 
three daughters and two sons, Mrs. Arthur Marlatt, Corning; Mrs. A. E. 
Coleman, Omaha, Nebr.; Mrs. L. V. Bair, Leon, Iowa; Clarence Bender, Corning, 
and A. H. Bender of Cascade.
