M. Slattery Burial Was in California Funeral services for J. M. Slattery, 78, former Vinton resident, were held Feb. 20, in Los Angeles, Calif., where his death occurred Feb. 18 in the Methodist hospital, and burial was in Inglewood cemetery near that city. Mr. Slattery will be remembered by older residents of Vinton. A few days before his death, Mr. Slattery fell and fractured his hip. James Monroe Slattery was born in Vinton, May 26, 1857, a son of John and Elvera Slattery. Most of his early life was spent in and around Vinton. In 1883 he was married to Nancy Hayward. Three children were born to this union, Ray Slattery of Williston, N. D., Mrs Thursa Fugl of Los Angeles, and a son who died in infancy. The Slattery family left Vinton in Marach 1905 to farm near Ida Grove, living there 14 years. Mr. and Mrs. Slattery retired in 1918 and moved to Los Angeles. Besides the widow and two children there is one brother living, Will Slattery of Omaha and two sisters, Mrs. Cornelia Oyler of Vinton and Mrs. Ella Halpin of Madison, S.D.
