Benzine died Saturday at Waterloo August A. Benzine, 76, WWI veteran and longtime resident of Sumner, died at 5:25 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 19 at Schodtz Memorial Hospital, Waterloo, following a coronary occlusion. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 22 at 11 a.m. at the Nottger Funeral Home Chapel, Waterloo, with the Rev. Homer Larsen and the Rev. Luther Wachholz, pastors of Nazareth Lutheran Church, officiating. Burial was in St. John American Lutheran Cemetery north of Sumner. The Thomas K. Woods Post No. 223, American Legion of Sumner, conducted military rites at the graveside. August Benzine was born Jan. 22, 1896 in Bremer County, Iowa, the son of August and Anna Kahle Benzine. He served in the U. S. Army in World War I, including overseas duty with the American. Expeditionary forces. On Sept. 14, 1919, he was united in marriage with Alice Bartels at St. John American Lutheran Church, Sumner. Mr. Benzine was a self-employed mechanic in Sumner until 1948 when he and his wife moved to Cedar Falls. He was employed as a painter for a construction company when he retired in 1963. Mr. Benzine was a member of the Nazareth Lutheran Church of Cedar Falls, the Thomas E. Woods Post, No. 223, American Legion of Sumner and a former member of the Sumner Volunteer Fire Department. He is survived by his wife, Alice; two daughter, Neva, Mrs. Harry Wilson of Sumner and Izora, Mrs. Donald Farnsworth of Burbank, California, and four grandchildren.
