The small settlement of New Albion once was located south east of the cemetery. Ebenezer W. Babcock of Black Hawk County sold one acre of land to Lewis Rathe, Joseph Conn and Edward Dawsen, trustees of Butler County, for the sum of one dollar on January 10, 1867. People have told of another small burying ground south of the platted town of New Albion. It was near an old mill that was found on land belonging to Ann Spain. Some stones and graves were said to have been moved to the New Albion Cemetery. We are not sure what happened to others. Harry and Earl Vanderlon and Jim and T.J. Spain once dug graves and were paid the sum of two dollars to be split four ways. Memorial Day programs were held at the cemetery, usually the Sunday before Memorial Day. Once a twenty-five acre grove of trees stood to the east of the cemetery. County workers would bring out planks to lay across stumps for seating. Some of the speakers for these early programs were Dale VanEman, Richard Mulder and W.T. Evens of Parkersburg. Children from Jefferson School No. 4, New Albion School and Albion School No. 5 brought fresh flowers and marched in the program. It has been said that the children who did not participate in the Memorial Day program would not receive report cards thus a large number of children attended.
