In the early years, Coldwater Township had two large groves; one called Lower Grove located in Section 13 and 14 and Halls Grove, the smaller of the two, located in Section 8. In the early fifties Mrs. Mary Hall, her five children and a niece settled in a cabin which they built in the grove in Section 8. Mr. Hall and a son Thomas joined a wagon train bound for California during the gold rush. Mr. Hall died during the trip and Thomas returned to Halls Grove. The first church service was held in the Hall cabin delivered by Rue Schaffer, a United Brethren minister who traveled a circuit of 350 miles on horseback. In the year 1891 the Halls Grove Church was built and dedicated by the United Brethren people, who organized a few years before. Rev. William D. Hartsough was the minister at that time. Around 1950 the church building was sold to a church in Mason City and was torn down. A cemetery was laid out a short distance from the Halls Grove Church along Cold Water Creek. Many of the early settlers were buried here. The cemetery rests almost in the center of Section 8 midst a grove of trees. It is unfortunate that many of the markers have been vandalized over the years making it impossible to trace the names of those buried in the cemetery.' The cemetery is also known as Haselroad or De Boises Woods Cemetery. Children of Wm. and M. Hesalroad: (This stone is in very good condition.
