CEMETERY: Harlan Cememtery, Butler Co., IA This file was contributed for use in the USGenWeb Archives by: Ken Kothe September 1997 Copyright. This acreage was used by the early settlers in the west part of Pittsford Township, Butler County and the east part of Ingham Township, Franklin County. Jehu Harlan, his wife Susanna and their children immigrated from Richland County, Ohio to Butler County, Iowa. They purchased land and built their home one-half mile north of the present cemetery. He was in poor health after their long journey and passed away on December 9,1855 and was the first person to be buried here. The Harlan Cemetery Association was not organized until October 6,1894, by George Schuler, Levi Read, James Evans who was the first president William Jamison secretary, Theodore Ahrens treasurer, and James Harlan sexton. The annual Memorial service brings old settlers to reminisce and a strong feeling of community spirit is manifested at these gatherings. Harlan Cemetery can be found in Section 19 of Pittsford Twp, one mile north and two miles west of the town of Dumont. A flag pole was erected in 1964 by the Aredale American Legion Auxiliary unit No. 684. A plaque nearby reads: "In sacred memory of the Army, Navy, Marine and Air Force veterans who gave their lives for their country in time of war." A section letter and a plot number can be found after each name listed in the following pages to help you find a grave you may be looking for. Section A is at the West end of the cemetery. B is to the East of that, C to the east of that, E to the east of that and Section D is in the very SW corner of the cemetery. A drive separates A from B, B from C etc. The smaller numbers are nearest the road and get larger as you go south.
