Among the early settlers in Ripley Township in 1855 were John and Christian Hites, John in section 20 and Christian in section 28. In October of 1855, the first burial took place. It was the small daughter of Samuel Kimmel. This was also the first death recorded for Ripley Township. The burial was made on what is known as the 'Big Lot' south and east of the tree. On this lot are buried the families of Christian Hites, C.H. Kimmel, G.M. Graft, John Hites, Cid and Christian Stoners, Andrew and George Hesse, and Patterson. When the original cemetery was platted is not known, but it was probably in the 1870's as the first recordings of lots bear the dates of 1885. The east section was added in the early 1900's. Christian Hites died on June 28,1861. There are eleven servicemen buried in Hitesville. From the War of 1812 was Jacob Yost. From the Civil War were Jerry Margretz, George Wintz, Henry Gibson and Joe Considine. From World War I were Ed Langston, Emmet Graves, William Santee, Arthur Yost and Melvin Johnson. From World War II was Elmer Schriever. Many Hites families were among the first settlers in the area. From these families came the name Hitesville. In 1871, a postoffice was established at Hites- ville, with J.S. Margretz as the first postmaster. The office was located in a house on section 19. This office served by a mail carrier was on the route from Aplington to Bristow. Hitesville Cemetery is a township cemetery for the use of the surrounding territory. It is tax supported and under the direction of three trustees. It has never belonged to any church. A new fence was erected in 1926 and was replaced in 1964. In 1976 many of the older stones were repaired and reset. This project was financed by solicitations and donations. The Hitesville Cemetery is found in Section 29 of Ripley Township, Butler County, Iowa. Alberts, John F. 1858-1936 L173 Vrouwtje 1856-1927 L173 Albert son of F. & H.
